The Jenner Vaccine Foundation’s mission is to support the development of innovative vaccines against major infectious diseases of man and animals.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the Foundation are to develop new vaccines for globally important human and veterinary diseases by providing resources for vaccinology Research programmes, Training, Advocacy

Research programmes

The Foundation will work to accelerate the development of vaccines for the prevention of major human and animal diseases. The main human target diseases will be tuberculosis, malaria, influenza, HIV and hepatitis C. The main animal target diseases will be foot-and-mouth disease, bluetongue disease, avian influenza and exotic animal diseases that threaten the UK’s food supply.
Tuberculosis and influenza are diseases for which collaboration between human and veterinary scientists is likely to be especially productive. The JVF will support research during the coming years through:
  • strengthening the network of Jenner Investigators,
  • the appointment of new fellows to work in strategic areas who will enhance collaboration between the University of Oxford and the Institute of Animal Health,
  • seed corn funding for innovative ideas,
  • developing enhanced links with the pharmaceutical industry,
  • lobbying for the provision of adequate facilities for the testing of human and animal vaccines.

Training

The Jenner Vaccine Foundation will support training in vaccinology by:

  • providing further training for Jenner Investigators,
  • providing a suitable environment for PhD students in vaccinology,
  • developing short courses in human and veterinary vaccinology,
  • running short courses in specific areas relevant to vaccinology such as Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and ethics,
  • all training activities that will take into account the importance of training scientists from developing countries in vaccinology.

Advocacy

The overall aim of the Foundation’s Advocacy portfolio is:

  • to create a climate in the UK, and more widely, where vaccinology is seen as an important and effective way to invest in disease reduction, by politicians and the general public,
  • to become the first port of call for all media enquiries about vaccines,
  • to be trusted by the general public as an independent and reliable source of information about vaccines.

This will be achieved by:

  • commissioning and publishing authoritative and independent reports on vaccine issues of current public interest,
  • developing a high-quality website which provides up-to-date information on vaccine issues,
  • developing a network of experts prepared to talk to the media,
  • increasing links with other like-minded organisations (e.g. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Sabin Institute, WHO, and the Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunisation) and with organisations responsible for vaccine implementation.
